When Your Child Says “I’m Trans”: New Parent Starter Pack

By Stella O'Malley, Amanda Miller and Sara Morrison

Today, August 16th, marks ROGD Awareness Day—when researcher Lisa Littman first published her groundbreaking paper on Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria in 2018. She gave a name to what thousands of parents were seeing: teenagers with no childhood gender issues suddenly identifying as trans after social media immersion or peer influence.

To mark this day, we’re releasing a working draft of the new Parent Starter Pack—a comprehensive guide that reflects today’s rapidly changing landscape. Over the coming weeks and months, Genspect will be reviewing and updating all its guidance materials.

When Your World Turns Upside Down

Your child says they’re transgender. Suddenly you’re facing impossible decisions. The school wants to use a new name. Your child threatens suicide if you don’t affirm. Their therapist pushes for transition. Their friends are all trans or non-binary. They’re on Discord and TikTok constantly. They want hormones and surgery. They hate you for having questions.

You need help. Real help. Not ideology.

What’s in the Starter Pack

Our new guide gives you practical tools based on the latest evidence, including the Cass Review, the US HHS report, and recent legal changes:

  • What to say when you don’t know what to say
  • Your rights when schools pressure you
  • Dealing with social media without losing your kid
  • Protecting siblings who feel invisible
  • Questions to ask therapists who push affirmation

We Need Your Feedback

Since this is a working draft, we need your input. What’s missing? What would have helped you?

You’re Not Alone

Your concerns are valid. Your questions aren’t hate. Your instincts are right.

The Parent Starter Pack (working draft) gives you evidence-based tools to navigate this crisis while keeping your family together.
