Detransitioners Unheard: Ian’s Story
Plus: Detrans Awareness Day comes to Washington DC
By Genspect
Doctors called Ian “the archetypal transwoman.” They stated that he was at the least risk of ever regretting his choice. Today, Ian is a detransitioner.
His journey to transition followed a familiar path. He was distressed after his dad left the family home, and his struggles piled up in his teen years. When a knee problem ended the sports that anchored Ian, the internet soon drew him in. He found support in online groups, where he slowly reshaped his self-perception. Following that initial doctor’s visit, where he was informed that he was “archetypal”, he started to think that he was a person who was always meant to transition. He didn’t dig into the reasons behind his feelings and neither did the clinicians.
Ian pursued medical transition for eight years. But even after surgery, the promised fulfilment never came. When his world finally fractured, the same clinicians who had readily approved his transition offered him therapy.
The story doesn’t end there. Hear from Ian in the latest short animated film in our Detransitioners Unheard series.
Please share this on social media. Over the holidays many of us are home with family, conversations are happening, and stories like Ian’s can reach someone who needs to hear them.
Ian is the third person to speak in the series, after Forrest and Claire. These films were created because detransitioners are rarely given the chance to be heard on their own terms. We have more in the works. Please let us know if you would like your detransition story to be presented in our series.
Detrans Awareness Day: Washington DC, March 12th, 2026
We are excited to announce that Genspect will be hosting an event on Detrans Awareness Day in Washington, DC on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
Detransitioners have been ignored, dismissed, or treated as inconvenient exceptions for too long. Their needs have gone unaddressed by the same medical systems that fast-tracked their transitions.
This summit meeting will be solution-focused, centering on Life Beyond Transition. What do detransitioners actually need? How should healthcare systems respond when someone seeks to reverse or halt a medical transition? What does compassionate, non-ideological care look like in practice?
At this conference, Genspect will release a draft Detransition Primer, the first document of its kind. The Primer will offer a framework to address clinical care, psychological support, legal questions, and the particular needs of people who have detransitioned. We’re developing it with direct input from people living beyond transition, alongside mental health and medical professionals. Please let us know if you would like to be involved.
There’s little information out there for how to work with this population. We want to change that by bringing the right people into the room.
