Listening to the Silenced: Genspect’s Mission for Thoughtful, Honest Care

By Stella O'Malley

At Genspect, we believe real support begins with listening, not lecturing.

We’re an international organisation committed to evidence-based approaches to gender-related care. We offer a middle ground in a conversation that too often descends into extremes. We are not ideologues. We’re clinicians, detransitioners, parents, and professionals who care deeply about safeguarding young people and restoring integrity to medical practice.

Every week, we host support groups for detransitioners and for people who identify as trans. These are people who once believed that hormones and surgery were the solution to their distress. Today, they live with irreversible changes and unanswered questions, often abandoned by the same institutions that once praised their “bravery.”

Our groups are built for them: for example, co-ed, women-only, and pediatric transitioners who are now adults. We don’t label – we support.

But Genspect is more than support. We are also a voice in the public square.

Debate Where There Has Been None

In Ireland, legislation around gender has been shaped by haste and, in some cases, strategic silence. The 2015 Gender Recognition Act, passed with barely a murmur, substituted sex with gender, creating legal grey areas that still confuse courts and clinicians.

It wasn’t a mistake – it was a tactic. Influential lobbying groups advised pushing gender identity laws alongside more popular movements, such as marriage equality. Ireland became a case study in how trans legislation could be passed under the radar, unnoticed by the public until the consequences became unavoidable.

Voicing Reason

That’s why we speak out. Medical transition is not a trend – it is a serious, often devastating intervention. It demands rigour, data, and ethical restraint. We support open, honest conversations that put patient welfare above politics.

Our mission is simple: protect the vulnerable. Empower clinicians to ask difficult questions. Ensure that people receive care that is not only affirming, but also accurate, safe, and grounded in reality.

The silence around these issues has lasted long enough. At Genspect, we’re here to break it – with compassion, clarity, and courage.

This article builds on themes raised during Stella O’Malley’s Gript Livestream on 23rd April, where Genspect’s mission and the lived experiences of detransitioners were central to the conversation.
